Inside the mind of 24601

Sometimes, the wife asks me what I’m thinking. Often, the answer is “nothing” — the mind is in neutral, just a-waiting for something to be worth thinking about. Other times, the answer just isn’t worth knowing. For example, I was giggling away as I took the picture below.

Six laundry balls vs two dryer balls. It’s like testing the age old question, who would win, a full sized ninja or a bunch of midget ninjas!

Once I had a dream, but now that dream is over

Listening to the last seconds of the game last night was painful and tiring.

In truth, I should be used to it by now. This was not one of the Canucks stronger seasons in recent memory and blowing leads has been a reality of this season.

Uh yeah, what she said

Some of the Slanty’s had a high school acquaintance pass away last week. Even though I knew Aidan Oloman only as one would know somebody a couple of years younger (albeit in a small, close-knit, clannish school), hearing of her death made me feel…empty and listless.

In Googling her name I found somebody that had also known her, and expressed her regrets with the words that I’ve been having trouble finding.

Chicago Canadienne Remembers Aidan

She was no doubt living her life to the fullest. I too wish I had been lucky enough to know her as an adult.

Eats with me: France vs China

The wife and I have different cooking styles.

She starts out with an end in mind, and assembles ingredients to match. I start with ingredients in mind (usually whatever happens to be in the fridge), and create a dish out of those ingredients. Simply put — I do a lot more improvisation that her.

This leads to some interesting dishes. A couple of days ago, I cooked a Chinese influenced pea-soup. (Seems fitting, considering our heritage.) It was pretty memorable, enough so that I might even make it again. Rough recipe follows. Continue Reading »

Post-Halloween thoughts

November 1st can be a cold and dreary day. Doubly so when you bike to work in the rain. Brrr!

33 kids came to the door in an hour and a half last night — we ran out of candy (last year, we had maybe 20 kids all night).

Next year, we’ll buy a little more candy and maybe I’ll listen to the wife when she says to be a little harder on the kids not wearing costumes.

“Why are you kneeling on my doorstep?”
“So we can look shorter.”

Uh-huh.

Travels with me: Return

“Double rum and coke, sir? Its included”

I’d like to say that those were the happiest words I’d ever heard in my life — but given the conditions, they were actually a necessary solace.

Travels with me: Computer and booze DO mix

Morning.

Compared to yesterday, this is a cinch. Of course, as a certified moron, I’m not making it easy on myself — I did stay up past midnight, watching “Alien vs Predator”. I highly recommend avoiding the movie, ranking it below classics such as “Tomb Raider”. Less plausible storyline (!), and less Angelina Jolie

Travels with me: On the wisdom of drinking Coke

In the morning, the wisdom of drinking tequila and Coke became apparent. Specifically — when one is drinking tequila and Coke, its very very easy to switch to straight Coke without any pressure to drink more.

No hangover.
