The summer of the kid, first post

So, there have been lots of events lately, some bigger, some smaller in the last few weeks.

  • Most importantly, the little guy is now crawling consistently, so cat food is the least of my concerns — the stairs and large heavy objects are way more important.  Getting around the house is a little more challenging now.  The house is also a lot tidier — less things to pick off the floor and eat, we hope.
  • We have a piano now!  Getting the piano from my parents place to here has been on the to-do list for a few years since we’ve moved into our house.  (Of all of my sibs, I played the longest.)   The movers, from Music Box moving, were fantastic.  Highly recommended.  From my parent’s place to our place it was a grand total of 35 minutes — it was shocking how quickly they got it up and down those stairs.
  • The kid’s favorite uncle has come to visit for the second time — first time was at just a few months old, and he was OK (not crying all the time) but the kid is way more fun this time.
  • We went to the UBC Farm market this last weekend.  We already frequent others farmers markets, but this was truly as close to the source of the food as we’ve ever been (other than our own garden, of course).  We’re believers in eating locally (sometimes) and knowing where your food is from and how its impacting the world.  We got a bunch of lamb’s quarter and some beautiful garlic and some fragrant lavender.
  • In direct contrast to the ‘eat locally’ movement, we went to visit Everything Wine which bill’s itself as BC’s largest wine store.  Its got wine from all over the world at very reasonable prices — something to satisfy the bottom end and top end winos that you may know (OK, there wasn’t a lot under $10, but then again, is there much under $10 worth drinking?)  We went with another couple who love their wine and have recently had a baby — and so, getting back on the wine bandwagon was on their to-do list.  We found some Henschke (but not Henschke Hill of Grace) and were considering buying some for the boy, but we got steered to another bottle instead.  Hopefully it’ll still be good when he can drink.

Best summer ever, 24601 version

For those of you wondering why I’ve dropped off the air, I _had_ been working pretty much like a madman the past few weeks — I finally got remote access to my PC at work, and I definitely made use of it. And the reason for my sudden conversion to working until 11PM or midnight on weeknights was my impending end of work.

I am now on parental leave until the middle of October, taking care of the kid.

Its been a long time since I’ve taken such a huge downshift away from work, but really, its just a different kind of work, which involves smaller syllables, mushy food and a lot of cleaning up.

It will be a summer to remember, for sure.  More blog soon.  :-)

Best summer ever.

We’re home…

Wow, i’ve been on holidays for 3 weeks and 2 days now.  We’ve been to France (with Tom in tow), we’ve travelled around the South of England, and we also made a trip to Oz for Kate’s sister’s wedding.  Photos to come, gotta finish washing first!

It was great to catch up with people too… if we didn’t see you, sorry, it was a rushed visit… Thanks to those who put us up (Jo, D+N and Mum and Dad).

I also met me nephew Paxton for the first time.

What a trip.  I’m ready for some sleep now!
