3d goes corporate

3d started his new job today and I was so impressed with the change from his usual work attire (pajamas on a good day), that I had to take a picture (you can guess which was the beginning and which was the end of the day).

To dine

College life at the University of Oxford is different to most Universities around the world.  Many traditions have been clung to, for no other reason that “we’ve always done it that way”.  Dining is one tradition that still has some old aspects to it! (see photo I took of Christ Church’s dining hall as used in the films of Harry Potter HERE)  Kate and I went and dined in St John’s College last week with a friend from my work.  He, being a student there, had to wear his gown - that’s a tradition that they’ve stuck to!  Most college dining halls do two seatings a formal and an informal.  We were at formal hall which means the is table service.  Note: the St John’s logo on the plates, always served to you at 12 o’clock.  The wine was of course French.

Sorry about the quality of the mobile phone photos that I’ve posted HERE, but it given the formality I didn’t want to take in the camera and use flash photography!

High table consists of all of the senior academics and their guests.  They get different food and wine to us (the grads and undergrads).  They also have table cloths on their tables!  It was a lovely experience good food and great atmosphere!

Sussex and beyond

To escape the snow in Oxford (see last post) we headed to Sussex to have a look around where Kate was born. Since she hadn’t been there for about 26 years, she couldn’t remember much! We stayed with a friend of the family and had a great time in their company. While there we looked around at various villages and made a trip to Brighton (famous for it’s pier and it’s pebble beach). It was a lovely sunny day in Brighton… to the extent that I managed to get my bald patch sun burnt (yeah I know, not only am I an idiot, but I’m unique as I’m one of the few people who can get sun-burnt in April in England - I have been congratulated by many on my effort).

We have since purchased sun-screen (SPF 50+ is available here…)

The highlight of the food side of the trip was eating whelks. What are whelks? Sea snails. See photo HERE

and here is a lovely picture of us, look at how bright it is!

Couple of Slanty worthy news items

You can’t help but writing about a flying priest who hooked himself up to about 1000 helium balloons.  I mean, as a kid, I’m sure you always wondered about grabbing a huge bunch of balloons to see if you’d take flight.

Apparently, its possible, although not recommended.  Hopefully he’s with his God now.

In other news, I hear that SlantyOJ might have reason to go  back to university and ace some courses.  There’s a local university offering a sociology course on the Simpsons.

In the class, students apply post-modern theory, “frame” the Simpsons in the debate between high and low culture, and explore how irony, parody and satire function in the show.

Blakeborough believes we’re drawn to The Simpsons because it explores both universal and particular elements of our culture — everything from the role of the family, school, religion and government to gun control, bullying, vegetarianism and same-sex relationships.

“The Simpsons is capitalist western society in a little yellow microcosm, blown up, parodied, mocked, satired. Same ideals and issues we deal with every day.”

Not blurry eyes revealed

In our post blurry blurry eyes not, we hinted (OK, it wasn’t a very subtle hint) that a Slanty member was pregnant.

Congrats to SlantyK and Slanty2K.

Taking Ugly to a whole new dimesnion..

I guess Dales not the only ‘3D’ anymore…

Blurry blurry eyes not

When you drink lots, sometimes you see double. One object becomes two.

However I’ve been told that cameras don’t drink and photos don’t lie.

So, to the photographer, congrats!
