Apparently size and branding matter

In the brief time that I worked with Slanty2D, I learned a little bit about the world of really really large photocopiers printers. I didn’t work there long and I wasn’t a field guy (good thing probably), so I didn’t get a chance to see the competitors machines.

I didn’t, for example, realize that when HP Scitex makes a large format printer, they make it look remarkably like their desktop printers.  Except, of course, they’re are like a zillion times bigger.

The danger of not using Google safesearch

Say, you’re looking for pictures for an internal blog post.  Its the holidays, and you’re using Google image search and looking for a picture of holly

All I’m saying is that I’m glad that I’m quick with the mouse.  Its even worse if you image search that nice material, ‘amber’.

Great party blender

From the same educational institution that spawned Clocky, the alarm clock that runs away from you (mentioned here and here), somebody has now come up with Blendie, the blender that runs depending on how you growl at it.

Imagine a margarita party with one of these things.  Now imagine it a few hours into the evening.

I bet even the kids could get into the action…

Must not waste a drop

Tim Bray is a local blogger (and technical guru, seeing as he is listed as one of the inventors of XML)

I’ve been reading his blog for a while — its a little bit of local reflection (plus a lot of geek).

I’ve recently discovered that he likes the fermented grape and is unwilling to let it go to waste – another good reason to like him.

Dear Google, he’s definitely going to top your chart for this term on his own account, but still, I might as well contribute.  He’s an expert on baby hand wine.

My Deep Conversation Yesterday…

So yesterday Mikko and I walked about 1.5 km looking for pirate treasure which we do quite a bit now. Anyways, I thought I would share some of his deep philosophical musings.

“Looking for pirate treasure, pirate treasure, pirate treasure” repeatedly while waving his arms around.

“There’s a mushroom. MUSHROOOM! It’s poisonous. It’s poisonous. Don’t touch it. Don’t touch. The mushroom is poisonous” – OK I really don’t know what SlantyWife is teaching my son while I am at work.

“The leaves are running, the leaves are running, the leaves are running” – the wind blowing the leaves along the ground.

“That’s a SCARY wind. Walk away, walk away. No like the wind” – same wind blowing in his face.

“That’s the HUUUGEST truck ever! It’s a BIIIIG ONE!” – er, a big truck passed us.

“Stomp on the puddle.” – had his yellow gumboots on. He likes to hop and stomp on every puddle we see except the “really muddy ones”

“Touch the tree. Touch the tree.” – repeatedly like a broken record. He likes to well, touch ALL the trees.

In the end though we didn’t actually get to this pirate treasure we were after since we were stymied by the non-inglish speaking ukranian caretaker who is known not like us pirates. That being the case, I always keep a spare pirate treasure in my pocket for Mikko to cover such cases.

Giving credit where credit is due but surely

Google maps are a fascinating tool.  Since they were released, people have been mashing up the maps into various tools — real estate sites obviously, but many other relatively non-commercial sites.  Google Sightseeing describes various locations on this wide wide Earth with photos and links to the appropriate Google Earth maps.

For example, they’ve got a little post about Hawaiian Volcanoes with some facts and pictures.  Interesting stuff.  More interesting still is that our favourite scholar, SlantyOD, is quoted as a reference.  As far as I can tell, he must have found the Dave does Maui page and used it as a resource.  (Or you could look at Dave does Maui in the original form

Too bad they didn’t use some of the photos from that post.  Like I just did.  :-)

Dear son…

I will never be able to think of the phrase “he blows chunks” without thinking of your newborn diapers.

Love Dad.
