Monkey see, monkey do

Here’s a mini-restaurant review for Spanish Tasting Bar, a new restaurant not coming to Vancouver:

“I had the pleasure of dining with a couple of young Argentinian restaurateurs the other night. Chef Simon Ibanez (just 28, from Buenos Aires), his wine-growing partner Javier Russo (from Mendoza), and Russo’s wife Nora (a Canuck straight out of Shaughnessey) are opening a new 45 seat modern Spanish tapas bar simply called “Spanishâ€? in a killer space in Gastown not far from So.cial at Le Magasin (not allowed to say exactly where yet).

Nothing out of place – lots of spaces opening in Gastown with cool food and the like.  Except this restaurant was invented by Urban Diner, a local writer/blogger of the food scene to out somebody copying his work.  Here’s the Google cache of the offending review on Martini Boys  Too bad, sounds like another cool restaurant that I would unfortunately not get around to visiting for months… This is why the blogosphere should be taken with a grain of salt, maybe a large flake of Spanish sea-salt in this case.

We ate the whole thing?

The ulty team actually ordered a Priscilla Platter from Memphis Blues last night. I didn’t take photos, but the meat looks a lot like this:

In addition to the main plate of meat (pictured above), there was a plate full of the standard sides AND a most delicious plate of seafood (breaded oysters and catfish). Having never ordered the oysters or catfish before, I definitely was most interested in these — didn’t manage to snag the catfish though. Breaded oyster though…Definitely good.  (For those of you that have never been, to give you a sense of context, its a $120 plate of food which only includes fries and coleslaw and cornbread and beans as vegetables… definitely not health food, served in “definitely not health food” quanitities)

I was shocked we finished it, but I suppose seeing as there WERE 12 of us and almost everybody else on the team is in their mid/early 20s (tops) and in their eating prime, I suppose its me that misjudged. Maybe the beer filled me up (seeing as I was nearly the only one drinking it). Yeah, that’ll be my excuse

The photo above was taken by somebody I don’t know and dumped onto Flickr. Turns out, they were using eating the Priscilla Platter as a pre Turducken warmup. Oof.

More murals!

Took a few more photos of murals this weekend when my sister Maggie was in town. So here they are! With descriptions! Will the wonders never cease! It would be wise, however, not to expect this level of activity in the future…

Firstly, there’s been a few updates on the Solidarity Wall, situated on the Falls Road just around the corner from my work. Here’s the original wall:

But now they’ve replaced Bodenstown, Manchester Martyrs and Fight Racism with Supporting Community Artists:

and Las Brigadas Internacionales:

I had to read up on that last one, the wikipedia entry is here if you’re interested. Full points to Las Brigadas for well designed poster art!

A game for the whole family!

I was browsing the Nobel Prize web page when I found this little gem.

Give it a go, it’s educational and fun…

We now pause for station identification…

Sorry folks, or at least the only two people I know for sure who are reading this, and this doesn't include my wife :(

I'm in the middle of a two week work session in Kamloops and my hotel doesn't allow internet access. I've been able to get on to post this, but don't have access to my pictures or what I've written in my journal. Im still writing, though, so the rest of the trip will go up pretty quickly once I get home.

From Beijing to the equally grey and smoggy skies …

2D != Metal

Well, we know that 2D says that he’s all about the metal (METAL!!) and I’d say its mostly true

But if you check out Slanty2D on LastFM you’ll find a couple of anomalies. Like why is he listening to Blondie and Madonna??

If you check out 24601 on LastFM you’ll find that chick pop has dropped lower on my rankings, to be replaced with my usual mixup of music but especially the Man in Black

Weekend review (Whitewater rafting, Gastropod and Cactus Club)

I know that some of you only learned that I had siblings years and years after you met me  — those of you that had to phone my house during high school probably have some sense as to why I don’t much talk about them.  ;-)   I love my family but it doesn’t mean that I spend that much time with them.  So, it may come as news that my brother is getting married on the soon-ish side, and that he was in town this weekend for his stag.

So, some thoughts on the weekend. Continue Reading »
