My Tuesday, or a review of Fred Herzog @ VAG

Yesterday was a prototypical Vancouver day for me. It started with showers but by noon broke into sunshine. After work, I raced off in the sunshine-kissed rain to the Vancouver Art Gallery to see a display of photos by Fred Herzog.

If you’re a Vancouverite, this display comes highly recommended. Fred was a medical photographer by trade but photographed the city in his spare time, starting in the late 50s. Much of his photography was in color, which was unusual for the time. The Kodakchrome film that he’s used seems to sing the history of the town in vivid reds and yellows and blues. The photos range from simple photos of a billboards in a parking lot to the busy gaudy neon up and down Granville street. We all know from the pictures upstairs that Vancouver has grown and these photos are the street level proof. Pictures of Robson Street, downtown, East Hastings — they all point to an earlier time. I hesitate to say “simpler because maybe some things change for the better — anybody remember a BIG RED “HOTEL VANCOUVER sign on top of the hotel. That’d be one of the things that we can leave in the past.

After the show, we caught the last period of the Vancouver-Dallas game and then walked a stretch of the seawall in the cool evening. Not a perfect day, but very very Vancouver.

Herzog runs until mid-May at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Admission is by donation on Tuesdays. Highly recommended.

Pork au vin

I'm a big fan of substitution in recipes. I do it because I don't have the necessary ingredients, but it usually works out. Today's dish was supposed to be coq au vin. I may have missed the actual recipe, as I forgot what herb/spices were supposed to go into it. I remembered the main ones, such as chicken, bacon and wine. Didn't have the chicken, so I substituted pork. Which is what we have here... pork and pork. Yummy! I love bacon. Double pork plus good.

87 Loonies? In a row!?!

So I’m languishing up here in Kelowna trying to fill my time by wandering on the internet. As I trundle along, I run into this; WestJet is having a bit of a sale on now : $11 flights.

So I looked it up, and it’s kinda true. You can fly from Calgary to Vancouver for $11. Return is $45. With taxes and everything included, a round trip flight is $87. Who woulda thought you could trade in 87 Loonies to go to Calgary and back.

…Then again, it is Calgary, I could probably find a better use for 87 Loonies….
