Gettin Old
Well, those who know us know we went on strike this xmas. That’s right, no tree, no lights, no eggnog (not a favourite in our house anyways), and no prezzies except for the kids. Understandable since Kanta Loupe McD is about to come any moment now. As such, this year has been by far one of the best we have ever done. Talk about stress free holidays.
In preparation for adding on to the family, we thought that dates out are going to become even less likely that they are now, so we did some boardgame shopping. Already having Carcassonne and Settlers in hand and played quite a bit, I did some googling and even managed to exert the effort to post the results on slashdot. As such we have added several award winning games to our games closet (aka the china cabinet since the china is packed in the basement so the Monsta can’t play with them).
First we have Hive, a strategic game that can only be described as speed chess on crack in 5 min or less. As well we also got Thurn & Taxis, 2006 Spiel winner that is often compared to Ticket to Ride. Third we picked up San Juan, the faster, more portable version of Puerto Rico (which we haven’t played). Finally we picked up Lost Cities, a two-person game that is quick, portable, and an awesome mix of luck and strategy. I am not sure if I should take it as a compliment or insult that when we go to drexoll games that they recognize us. At some point, I would also like to play Apples to Apples but that requires a large group and I think that it would be even better with Fireball mixed in which by the way never feels quite as good at six am the next day when Monsta wakes me up to play with his set of plastic (but working and noisy) home depot power tools.

This holiday we also frequented Drexoll Games a few times (and their website). Many games were played.
Blondie received “Go Fish” for an Xmas present. Its fun and quick — but the jury is still out on it — might be a little bit too simple, with not enough opportunity for human interaction.
We played lots of Settlers, introducing various people to it. We also got beat by various newbs — in the future, no more “helpful hints”.
We also had a chance to visit SlantyK and play “Knights and Castles” (the expansion for Settlers of Catan). Reading the rulebook was a bit intimidating, but it worked out in the end (if a little bit long — first time will do that to you). (In comparison, we’ve never played Seafarers, but after reading the rules I didn’t feel nearly as overwhelmed.)
Slanty2D discovered the Munchkin series of games (received as a gift). We had a chance to play it with him — again, confusing the first time but really fun and cool afterwards. We’ve since gone looking at all the expansion packs and the like — we’re thinking of trading Hey Thats My Fish in for some of the cards.
One day in the future, Apples to Apples….
Which Drexoll do you go to? The one in Vancouver I assume.
Was there at least an airing of grievances?

Sadly, though I love such games, the missus isn’t keen on them so I must resort to living vicariously through Slanty. Nothing new about that…
I looked at that Apples To Apples game, looked tasty. I’ve got a birthday coming up at the end of the month is anyone is looking for ideas
The Box-Of-Grievances is still in my possession, it’s actually sitting in the middle of my bedroom now.
Don’t ask me why it’s there, it’s been there for a couple months now and I don’t know when it’s going to move. Seeing as I’ve be away from home for 28 out of 33 days, doesn’t seem like it will be anytime soon.
….and does it seem spooky to anyone that I got checked into exactly the same room when I came back to the hotel in Kelowna? It weirded me out…
1: We go to the Vancouver store. We haven’t played Seafarers, but the Intimate Catan variant I sent you by email uses ships just like Seafarers. We are going to use the Volcano tile soon, but not the Jungle tile to mix SoC up a bit soon. Did you guys use The Great River from the Boxing Day party yet? If you return Fish, check out Lost Cities as another idea, it’s a great 2 player game that mixes luck and strategy. Every time I think I have the game figured out it surprises me.
3: We are all familiar with the site Mr. Sodomy. It’s a good site for reviews, new ideas & variants.
4: I am for someone getting AtoA 2D. If you get it, let us know, that would be a blast since you need at least 4 to play it. Did you ask the Kelowna hotel if they washed the sheets since your last visit?
