October 2006

It’s a bit dry down here…

So we’re now having a record drought as never before experienced.  It’s October (duh) and yesterday it was 37°C.  Normally those sort of temps are reserved for December and January.  So they say here that Melbourne has suffered one of the biggest declines in rainfall in the past decade on record.  I thought this post was a little ironic given 3D’s last post.

So how will this effect us?  Suggested crop failures is really putting the pressure on the ag industry.  We won’t be able to produce the normal levels of basic grains to last us the year… and will probably have to import.  It’s scary to think I can’t remember the last decent rain.  I don’t think there was one this winter.

hey lookit that, it’s snowing

NIAGARA-ORLEANS-NORTHERN ERIE-GENESEE- INCLUDING THE CITIES OF…NIAGARA FALLS…MEDINA…BUFFALO… BATAVIA 825 PM EDT THU OCT 12 2006 …HISTORIC SNOWFALL FOR THE NIAGARA FRONTIER…

A MAJOR EARLY SEASON LAKE EFFECT SNOW STORM CONTINUED TO PUMMEL PORTIONS OF WESTERN NEW YORK THURSDAY EVENING INCLUDING THE CITIES OF BUFFALO, TONAWANDA AND AMHERST IN ERIE COUNTY AND NORTH TONAWANDA IN NIAGARA COUNTY.

AT 8PM, UTILITY COMPANIES WERE REPORTING OVER 50,000 CUSTOMERS WITHOUT POWER. THE REASON FOR THE WIDESPREAD POWER OUTAGES HAS BEEN THE COMBINATION OF VERY HEAVY WATER LADEN SNOW ACCUMULATING ON TREES THAT STILL HAVE MOST OF THEIR LEAVES. TREES LIMBS BREAK UNDER THE WEIGHT OF THE SNOW AND BRING DOWN POWER LINES AS THEY FALL.

THE WORST HIT REGION THROUGH 8PM HAS BEEN THE NORTHERN THIRD OF ERIE COUNTY INCLUDING AMHERST AND TONAWANDA. SPOTTERS HAVE REPORTED ONLY ABOUT 2 TO 3 INCHES OF SNOW ACCUMULATING ON THE WARM GROUND, BUT SHOWERS OF SNOW PELLETS AS LARGE AS PEAS QUICKLY PILES UP ON TREE LIMBS AND BRINGS THEM DOWN. IF YOU LIVE IN NORTHERN ERIE COUNTY IN PARTICULAR, PLEASE DO NOT GO OUTSIDE UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. YOU COULD CONTACT DOWNED POWER LINES AND RISK ELECTROCUTION.

Racing racing racing

I am so tired. On Saturday, I did the Lotus Sprints. 33 minutes of paddling completely tired me out. I was on the FCRCC Mixed 1 team, and the FCRCC Men's 1 team. We did pretty well. 1st in Mixed, and 3rd in Men's.
The sprints are a bit different from regular distance outrigger races. It's more dragonboat like with the 1KM distance and the 3 turns we had to do. I like the distance stuff more, but this was entertaining.

Today, I did the Turkey Trot. They had a nice shirt and bag, and the best food afterwards! Salmon and cream cheese on baguettes, salami on baguettes, and great fruit. They had prizes for every category, and watching people go up to their prizes was inspiring. Actually, watching the seniors categories was the most inspiring. It's my goal to be running when I'm 70... I wanna rock in the 70 to 79 category one day.

Leveraging the power of Slanty for paradigm-breaking solutions

i submitted a photo over at jpgmag.com. you can vote for the photos that you think should go into the next issue, so go and click on mine below! it’s a photo of worcester in the “hometown” category, and if you wanted to nitpick you could point out that it’s neither my home nor my hometown. it is however definately a “town”, and maybe even somebody’s hometown.

Tooth hurty!

So yesterday at 2.30pm (I’m not joking) I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted.  I don’t think the word extracted does the experience justice… how about excavated? While my surgeon did a real quick, good job (check him out here – yes he has his own flashy website) I have had some side effects.  The one that is entertaining my better half the most is the progression from puffy, puffier to my current state puffiest.  And we have the photos to prove it.  So I just wanted to know, has anyone else had their wisdom teeth out and enjoyed the process???

Walking around naked

The best part about living on your own is being able to walk around naked if you feel like it.
