Mmmmm…. not!

I figure since I’m paying for it, I might as well use the CBC to get at least some of my news.

When I was there recently, I noticed a report on Supermarket Secrets which detailed food inspectors visits to supermarkets in Canada.  The results are a _little_ unsettling.  This is a quote from a representative of the Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors:

What you’re describing is not acceptable practice in our industry. I certainly won’t defend the indefensible… We find that in about two-thirds of municipal food inspection reports, there are no problems identified whatsoever, or the problems are very minor.

The interviewer points out that this means “That leaves a third of grocery stores that have problems that aren’t just minor.“  Continue Reading »

Inside the mind of 24601

Sometimes, the wife asks me what I’m thinking. Often, the answer is “nothing” — the mind is in neutral, just a-waiting for something to be worth thinking about. Other times, the answer just isn’t worth knowing. For example, I was giggling away as I took the picture below.

Six laundry balls vs two dryer balls. It’s like testing the age old question, who would win, a full sized ninja or a bunch of midget ninjas!

Once I had a dream, but now that dream is over

Listening to the last seconds of the game last night was painful and tiring.

In truth, I should be used to it by now. This was not one of the Canucks stronger seasons in recent memory and blowing leads has been a reality of this season.

Mmmm….. beef

This article both intrigued me and made my stomach rumble in the first two paragraphs.

Argentina on Two steaks a day

The classic begginer’s mistake in Argentina is to neglect the first steak of the day. You will be tempted to just peck at it or even skip it altogether, rationalizing that you need to save yourself for the much larger steak later that night. But this is a false economy, like refusing to drink water in the early parts of a marathon. That first steak has to get you through the afternoon and half the night, until the restaurants begin to open at ten; the first steak is what primes your system to digest large quantities of animal protein, and it’s the first steak that buffers the sudden sugar rush of your afternoon ice cream cone. The midnight second steak might be more the glamorous one, standing as it does a good three inches off the plate, but all it has to do is get you up and out of the restaurant and into bed (for the love of God, don’t forget to drink water).

Kicking and screaming into the future

My computer at home is an Athlon 1Ghz. That's right. It wasn't particularly fast when I bought it 5 years ago, and it's pretty much an antique today.
Over the years, I've had to replace 2 of the fans, the hard drive, added a CD burner, added a DVD burner and added more RAM. I don't run a lot of stuff locally on it, so it doesn't need to be particularly fast. I miss my work dual monitor setup when I'm trying to work from home though.
Anyways. I 've ordered an Inspiron 6400 from Dell. The only upgrades I got for it was the WSXGA+ LCD panel and a dedicated video card. I should be able to hook it up to my monitor and have both monitor and notebook screen going at the same time! Pity about the whole online ordering thing... it's such delayed gratification having to wait the 2 weeks or so for delivery.
