January 2006

Uh, yeah, not what he said

Reknowned political pundit Colin Brumelle predicts a Conservative majority. Tongue in cheek (I hope), but of course that didn’t come to pass.

Small world, huh? :-)

Uh yeah, what she said

Some of the Slanty’s had a high school acquaintance pass away last week. Even though I knew Aidan Oloman only as one would know somebody a couple of years younger (albeit in a small, close-knit, clannish school), hearing of her death made me feel…empty and listless.

In Googling her name I found somebody that had also known her, and expressed her regrets with the words that I’ve been having trouble finding.

Chicago Canadienne Remembers Aidan

She was no doubt living her life to the fullest. I too wish I had been lucky enough to know her as an adult.

Update: I found more Mini people remembering.  link  link

Later than the New Years photos….

Maybe its because we’re trying to forget about the awful Everclear

Boxing Day 2005

Y’know, they mention on the Everclear info page that it can be lethal when used for shots or jello shooters. I think we discovered that.

Geek on

So... it's Saturday night, and I'm about to switch to RAID 5!
Yes, what geek wouldn't be drooling about the prospect of data redundancy and faster read speeds?
Man... it doesn't get any better than this. Well... maybe 0+1.
Well at least I'm listening to some a dance mix. My life is so exciting, I'm not sure I can handle it anymore!

Taxes, brokerage fees, and customs duties

I pay my taxes. I pay my parking tickets. I pay my speeding tickets.
I do try to save when I can, which is why I get things sent to mailling addresses in the States when I buy off Ebay.
Anyways. I've been trying to be a good law abiding Canadian, and I thought that this time, I would get my latest purchase sent directly here, and pay the customs/duties as required. After all, it's the right thing to do. I figured taxes/duties would only be an extra 20 bucks or so.
So, I called today to find out where the package is, and how much the fees/duties/taxes are. 50 bucks! On a purchase that cost 69 bucks US! Sweet mary mother of jesus christ on a lollypop stick! Do they want me to continue crossing the border to pick my stuff up? Needless to say, I'm most unhappy about this little turn of events.
What lessons have we learnt today?
1. Never use UPS. A good 30 bucks of the 50 was brokerage fees. It should have actually only cost 25 in total if you use USPS. That's United States Postal Service, the people who go postal.
2. Get everything sent to the States, and drive down to pick it up. You can fill up with cheaper gas on the way up. So there.

Time wasters

Since I have no job to go to at the moment I have even more time to procrastinate, so here are a few things that have kept me laughing:

Ricky Gervais’ podcast.

A video clip from Ricky Gervais’ unknown early music career.

A BRILLIANT David Hasselhoff video.

And for some other diversions, check out the beermap.
