November 2005

Another way of saying we may have screwed ourselves

I like metaphors.

A couple of projects ago, we decided to stop testing one of our features because we figured something else was more important. A lot of loose ends were left lying about... At first, we dealt with them like a kitten plays with yarn, but today, they've turned into a strangle hold, and now they're hanging on us like an albatross.

Not bad. I've incorporated kittens (cute), and an albatross (old skool poem thing).

Eats with me: France vs China

The wife and I have different cooking styles.

She starts out with an end in mind, and assembles ingredients to match. I start with ingredients in mind (usually whatever happens to be in the fridge), and create a dish out of those ingredients. Simply put — I do a lot more improvisation that her.

This leads to some interesting dishes. A couple of days ago, I cooked a Chinese influenced pea-soup. (Seems fitting, considering our heritage.) It was pretty memorable, enough so that I might even make it again. Rough recipe follows. Continue Reading »

The performance Echo

So, I drive a Toyota Echo. A pretty nice car, but I think it has something like 108 horse power... when I turn on the air conditioner, it drops to 101 or so.

Anyways. It's not a performance vehicle, nor will it ever be. I am however, thinking of getting a performance air filter. Now, regular air filters use sheets and sheets of paper to filter our dust, and other crap. This tends to clog up very quickly, leading to decreased air flow. I don't suppose it's really important in an Echo, but decreased air flow is supposedly a cause of increased fuel consumption (less oxygen, less efficient burning of fuel, more pollutants, less horse power). Apparently they make performance air filters, and guess what? They make them for the Echo also!

That's right boys and girls, I'm getting a performance air filter from K & N filters! It's currently on sale from Canadian Tire. It runs about 90 bucks or so, but it's going to cost about 57 bucks.

What I did during my days off

Over the weekend, I went to a factory outlet sale at ROI Recreation, and purchased a black Cloudveil Serendipity jacket. The cuffs had started to become delaminated, so I took it in for repair. I called Cloudveil, who gave me the number for a Michael Down, of Mystery Mountain Enterprises. This is apparently their Canadian distributor. Ended up taking it to MEC, as they're pretty much the choice for repairing such things.

While I was at MEC, I also had a look at softshell pants. I'm such a gear whore.

Had my implantable contact lens put into my right eye. It's part of a clinical trial being sponsored by Alcon. It's called the posterior angle supported intraocular lens. Kind of neat. They roll the thing up into a needle, and it gets injected into the eye. My eyes were watery for the first day... the feeling you get when something is in your eye, and your eyes water up to get it away. I assume it was from the mild swelling caused by the lens injection. I woke up this morning, and everything was fine. Yay...

Replaced my windshield wiper blades today. Not the entire blade, just the rubber inserts. It's about a quarter the cost of a full on replacement, so it was quite cheap, about 15 bucks for genuine Toyota replacement parts. A bit of labour involved, so it can be tricky the first time. A friendly Toyota technician showed me how to do it.
