more fucked-uped-ness from south of the border: supreme court rules that local governments can go ahead and seize residential land for the purpose of economic development. unfortunately, i don’t think there’s a law for the reverse. there’s some strip malls around here that i’d like to seize for residential development. you know, put up some nice brownstones, maybe a few highrise condos. maybe i’ll just go pitch a tent in their parking lot and see what those mutherfuckers do.
this is all a bit ironic for the US, since the rationale — that the greater good is more important that inconveniencing a few residents — is you know, sort of socialist in nature. for context, you should also be aware that there’s a war on zoning laws in the US, and the rationale behind that is local governments have no right to tell individuals what they can build, or where they can build it. houston, for example, has no zoning laws whatsoever. i’ll say it again, just because it’s that unbelievable. houston has no zoning laws.
anyhoo, i’m off. i’ve got to go seize a strip mall under an eminent domain law which, unfortunately, exists purely in my own imagination. watch for me on the six o’clock news.
24601 points out: More talk on burning things to the ground and salting the earth. That’s right, we use the words burn it to the ground and salt the earth a lot.

“Honey, we don’t call them black people. We call them Afro-Americans.”
That’s overheard in MY life (or, my extended life, as I live vicariously through others).
If you wanted more crazy stuff though, you could check out Over heard in New York.

Just bringing to your collective attention once again this post, because Google Maps has recently been updated to include huge chucks of the world outside of North America, and suddenly Google Sightseeing got seriously cool again.
Here’s where Kate’s from. If you look real close you can almost see the people throwing bricks and glass bottles.

Some quotes missing from this list:
“It’s such a fine line between stupid, and clever.” – Spinal Tap
“I’d say they’re way off course. Way off course.” – Red Dawn
“Two days ago I saw a rig big enough to haul that tanker. You want to get out of here? Talk to me.” – The Road Warrior
“I’ll get your damn Swedes” – The Thing
“The chain in those handcuffs is high-tensile steel. It’d take you ten minutes to hack through it with this. Now, if you’re lucky, you could hack through your ankle in five minutes. Go.” – Mad Max

So, I found the article requested by Miss SlantyOz and made a copy — I guess being a student is good for something even if it doesn’t net financial rewards! So, tell me where to send it now …

Fanfic, in my mind, is most often associated with people wanting to write about events that could never happen inside the fictional canon — usually sexual encounters. Kirk/Spock and Mulder/Scully come to mind.
However, some fan fiction has the ability to expand the universe that the characters dwell in. One recent example is the Darth Vader blog. Originally online as a blog written by Darth Vader from Empire Strikes back and onwards, the full PDF version (in proper chronological order) includes scenes from A New Hope.
I highly recommend it and I wouldn’t be the only one. From the author’s blog:
Thousands of people have by now dropped me a line to tell me that they will never be able to watch Lucas’ saga without hearing my Vader’s voice in their heads, and that in the end they were caused to feel real pity for him.
That about sums it up. Darth Vader blog — read it! My preference was the PDF version.
