I’m not a praying man but..
My recent email conversation with Mark went thusly..
MSavoy: speaking of chaos… Kim’s water broke this morning… James isn’t in. The fun has begun.
DJackson: HOLY SWEET JESUS! Too bad it didn’t go yesterday, the solstice is a sweet time to have a birthday. Plus the poor kid is going to be a Capricorn, and you know what they say about those.
So, though I’m not a praying man, my thoughts will be with the family Hargrave for the next while. Here’s hoping for a smooth and easy birth, and for the clan to be blessed with a healthy new addition in time to be home for Christmas. How long til the kid’s on a unicycle? Anybody care to start up a pool?

Yeehaw! That’s awesome news! Unfortunately, Kim’s doctor said the baby’s head is big, so I also hope for an easy birth despite the big noggin. Best wishes, Hargraves! I can’t wait to meet little slanty!

Let the games begin!!
Woo Hoo! Wishing Kim an easy delivery, and wishing that James doesn’t completely freak, and pass out!
Actually, sorry to put a damper on things, but water breaking does not equal labour. Labour is defined by contractions, cervix change and dilation. Many a time I had pregnant women come in and say their water has broken only to find that they were incontinent of urine instead (it can be hard to tell the difference sometimes).
If it was her membranes rupturing, then that does happen prematurely (quite often actually). We call it PROM or premature rupture of membranes. Sometimes the membranes rupture outside of labour. They can close off again, but if they don’t then labour is induced 1 to 2 days later or the patient has a c-section. Personally I would go for the section all the way especially if it’s a big noggin cause those aren’t fun to push out, or so I’ve seen. So, let’s wait and see…
Forgot to say, if she is in labour, then hope they get a room with two beds, one for her and one for James when he passes out ;p
May the Force (to push that little tyke out) be with you SlantyByProxy…best wishes!
Oh, and don’t show any pictures of the delivery to SlantyWife. She doesn’t want to think about that day yet…
Jebus! I’ll be in the closet panicing… I don’t know why but that’s the joy of panicing…
James and the three Ps: Puke, Piss and Pass out.
And my money is on that kid on a uni at 2.6 years. Can they even walk then?
Oh, and when can Kim start drinking? Cause if I was to push something that big out of a hole that small I would need a BIG drink right after. Hell, during. Line up the shots of JD right on the instrument tray.
Anyhow, best of luck Kim.
Ciao
Wolf
exactly how big is this baby’s head?
and congratulations to you both. hopefully i get to see the little sucker next week!
Remember, uncles Brad and Wolf have got dibs on taking the little guy for walks down to Kits beach this summer to meet the ladies…
Oh, hang on..maybe we shouldn’t do it together…people might think we’re together, and just adopted him…crap..
Anyhow, good luck, Kim and James!!
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
I don’t know what I find funnier:
The thought of “uncles Brad and Wolf” causing sleepless nights for Kim.
Or me and you Walking the kid down the beach like a married couple.
Aaaaaaaaa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
Man, she could possibly be in the worst pain of her life right now and we are making fun of her fear of us. Could be worse, she could have a husband running around the operating room like one of the Marxs brothers peeing himself.
oh wait…
Your 40th is getting closer…you can start practicing now with the little one.
Damn, that’s some news, best wishes from downunder James and Kim!
Uncle Brad and Wolf. I don’t want to think about it…
I wish you a pain free delivery and a healthy baby! It is good to go into labour earlier rather than later. Otherwise the kid just keeps growing- you don’t want to push out a huge one! Can hardly wait to meet your new bundle of joy!
Late into the night they waited, all the little slantys. Waited for word of a yet to be named wee little slanty.
And they waited. And they wondered: Why doesn’t the papa Slanty have wireless at the hospital so he can update slanty.net?
But Slanty Bard replied that hospitals don’t even allow cell phones, much less high speed wireless internet connections.
And then they wondered if the papa Slanty had gotten drunk and passed out on his couch, forgetting about slanty momma at the hospital. It was a possibility, but no need to crack out the funeral atire yet as papa slanty didn’t like to drink alone. And the other slantys wouldn’t let him do that.
So they waited for a call, an update, or even untrue gossip.
And waited.
Ok, it sounds like more than 24 hours has gone by now. Anyone have any idea what is going on? Average labour for primip (1st baby) is 22 hours.
The cell phone things is a crock of sh*t. There has never been any evidence that they interfere with any equipment. Digital especially. My theory is that it interferes with allied healthcare workers’ brains…
So in the end most docs just ignore the cell phone ban and use them anyways. We are slowly getting things changed as we tune out the complainers.
Let the phone calls begin…heh heh
This morning was like christmas, I got up early to look on Slanty to see what was left under the baby tree… but Santa hasn’t made it yet… I guess he’s still passed out in the delivery room…
Santa has made it, I just spoke to a proud Daddy who asked me to pass on the info.
The lowdown is, Kim went into labour around 4am Wednesday. A bouncing baby boy was born about 24 hours later at 4:45am Thursday morning, coming in at 9.8 pounds.
Everything went well, although the birthing did take a long time, and apparently the baby is quite developed. As James describes him “He’s got a MASSIVE head, loads of hair and long fingernails. And a really small mouth.”
Unofficially, I’d like to claim the pool on the weight of the baby, as on June 15th I posted that the baby would weigh “9lbs (same weight as a 12 pack-o-bzzr)”.
Hot-diggity-dog, let the training of the infant begin!!!
Congrats to both Kim & James on their new family!
Woooo! Congrats. It’s a good time of the year to have a kid, no matter what anybody else says. Look how I turned out! (Actually, strike that last comment)
CONGRATS!!!! I’m so excited! I squeaked when Gord phoned me! Now everyone in the office knows, too! (and they don’t even know them!) HA!
Kim managed to gets it on a relatively good day….as in it’s no one elses birthday on the 23rd I believe (21st, 24th, and 25th are all taken).
Congrats Kim & James.
And I don’t agree, I think this is a crappy time of year to be born. You get ONE present.
My dad was born on Dec17th and I have only been giving him one present for years.
Ciao
Wolf
I spoke to Kim this morning, too. Luckily she called ’cause Ian turned off his alarm by mistake and was late for work! She sounded very happy and tired from her hard day. I suppose labour is good practice for the marathon of non-sleep that the big guy will put her through!
Congratulations Kim & James! Well Done!!!
Yee Haw! Another entry to the Boxing day gift exchange!
Oh no, I’m saying RELATIVELY it’s a good day to be born on. The month I agree isn’t the best…but you gets what you gets.
“What’s in one man’s book is in another man’s book.”
wow. congrats kim and james! 9.8 lbs — the kid is going to be a bruiser, just like his dad!
Holy crap, that’s a biggun. Congrats from Canmore! I’ve been checking every couple minutes to see what had happened, and don’t you know, the update comes when I’m out to lunch…
Bah, you’re ignorant. Instead of 2 crap presents you get one decent present. Or, on your 30th, you get a freakin’ electric guitar, man. How do you beat that?

Hmm, I don’t seem to remember typing that twice.
YAY!!! Congrats J&K! Will we be meeting the lil one on Boxing Day? Also, I’ve read a lot of “bouncing baby boy”, “the kid”, “he”, etc…has his actual name been announced yet? Or is he so god-like that he doesn’t need a name?
I guess I can post congrats now since my wife forbid me from posting early this morning since she thought someone might make a main post about it…but, congrats you two. I suggest celebrating birthdays in June then you get two separate celebration times and the kid doesn’t feel screwed.
Yaaaay! Congratulations!! Well Kim, all the hard work is now done. I mean, how hard can a baby be? You put food in one end, and it comes out the other…
SlantyK says: “Yee Haw! Another entry to the Boxing day gift exchange!” No fair getting rid of the baby that way!
Ya, that’s gotta violate the rules of the gift exchange–a baby is worth more than $15. In fact, I’m guessing that you could probably net 25 or 30 grand for a man-child..
Hey guys!!!!! Congrats. Kim that is quite an accomplishment… Don’t you know for a first kid you are suppose to try to keep the weight around the 7 lb mark as they only get bigger with each child. Take it easy and enjoy Christmas with the best christmas present you guys can ever have.
I couldn’t be more happy for you both!!! Yikes, almost 10lbs! Your boy may kick the crap out of ours when they start playing together. I hope you are resting up before you bring the new addition to your family home.
Ah, that’s funny, k2. Kim, looks like your third child will weigh roughly 14 pounds.
Congrats K/J! And glad that Kim called me this morning…was wondering why the phone wouldn’t turn off when I was hitting the snooze button on my alarm.
Just be glad that it’s not ‘I was wondering why the baby wouldn’t stop crying when I was hitting the snooze button on my alarm.’

Yeah, but at minus $180K (guessing 10K a year) by the time the kid is 18 would technically be less then $5.00.

The baby is free, it’s the maintenance charges that are killer.
The size of the kid was probably related to the borderline gestational diabetes. GD babies are always bigger (the pattern of bigger babies with subsequent deliveries still happens though – I once delivered a 13 lb baby to a GD mother). They usually return to normal growth patterns shortly after birth and will not necessarily be bigger than anyone else’s kids. Considering OJ is below the 50th percentile for weight by height, the kid will likely be perfectly normal, er, as normal as any SlantyKid could be.
Yes Wolf, perhaps, but you’re missing the spirit of my objection–in the current market conditions, if they chose to sell the baby, they could probably get 30 grand. Maybe more, if the couple they sold the baby to had been waiting a long time for adoption…
Congrats James and Kim that is so awesome!
Owch, must sleep.. a _HUGE_ mega thanks to everyone for coming down to the hospital, while it might seem like it’s not appreciated due to human zombie action, it was super cool!
People came and visited you??? Oh man, my sympathies, that blows. Sure it’s nice, but after 24 hours of pushing a melon out of a straw, most people usually want to sleep and recover. heh ehh. We’ll let you get semi-adjusted with the “monster”, er, “bundle of joy” (heh heh
before seeing you three.
Congrats you two! SlantyBard you must make all of this sound so appealing to your better half… she must be looking forward to her day.
“melon out of a straw”
“labour is induced 1 to 2 days later or the patient has a c-section”
Can’t you make it sound nice like we do at our office? ie ‘sleepy juice’, ‘Mr.Whistle’, ‘Mr.Bumpy’, ‘Mr.Thirsty’?
heh heh. I’m all for the sleepy stuff. I’m just bitter because after one delivery I had to throw out my socks and shoes because of all the “happenings”. I remember routinely going through multiple sets of scrubs, sometimes even for the same delivery. I haven’t said anything to my wife. My lips are sealed shut about the process.
Dude! I’m eating lunch over here!
I’ll all curious about “Mr Bumpy”.
Thats the slow speed drill… not as fast cutting so it tends to give a little more vibration vs. the high speed drill[aka Mr. Whistle].
Definately not something to on 24 Dec 2004 at 5:44 pm 55Swigger
Argh!.. my link didnt come through.. anyways was just going to add it is not something to PANIC over!
Congrats Kim and James. I’m excited to hear the name you’ve choosen. I’m sorry we’re not there to see the little one so make sure you post a picture. I realize how much I miss everyone when events THIS BIG happen. I’m so happy we all have the Slanty website to keep in touch.
