December 2004

Please open your wallets.

OK everyone, please help with what is one of the largest disasters ever. So far over 60,000 people have died. What you may not know is that there will likely be double that number of people that die in the aftermath. They will die of horrible diseases such as cholera (basically sh*t yourself to death in a couple of days), dysentery (bloody diarrhea death), typhoid fever (death from salmonella poisoning), and malaria. These are not pleasant ways to die and are totally preventable. Donations need to be in money. It costs tremendous amounts of resources to try and send items and food. It is more efficient to send money. I would suggest the Red Cross or some organization that will allow you to send money to specific causes. The donations are tax deductible and besides your contribution can save lives.

Editor’s note: Hi, this is your friendly neighbourhood 24601. This is a fantastic idea (in fact, Angel had already proposed something of the sort just yesterday evening). We will be taking a group collection in conjunction with our New Year’s party. If you are attending, please bring a donation. Also note that Red Cross accepts Mastercard/Visa, so we will probably be sending our collection there.

Update: The number of people who died from the tsunami is now estimated over 100,000. Here is some satellite imagery of the before and after effects. The size of the waves 4 hours after are huge:

And I thought Slanty already had a bad reputation..

I remeber once in grade 11 comp sci, Slanty2D accidently wrote a quick basic program that sent “Elvis lives!!!!” to the printer over and over… I wonder if he has now moved on:

New Santy.e worm to affect many more sites.

World’s 5th Largest Earthquake kills over 10,000

I soooo hope Owen is OK. This is extremely sad. There are many reports of children being ripped from their parents arms from the tsunami. This is horrible.

Merry Christmas, Slanty

Hope the holidays treat you and your loved ones well. Special thoughts to the newest little Slanty.

Merry F&*&*$% X-Mas

Or: Get that old man away from me!

Some of the funniest photos I have seen in a while.

Copyright and bittorrent

Yep, it has been all over the major weblogs about the MPAA going after bittorrent websites. I came across the website of a major swedish bt site and their legal threats page. Talk about freaking funny. They certainly have balls in standing up to intimidation tactics. The legal threats link is here. Take a look at their graphs too. Entertaining.

Gingerbread construction

Once upon a time (in simpler times), SlantyOJ constructed a gingerbread toaster during the Slanty gingerbread house party.

If he were geekier, he might have made a gingerbread CPU.

I’m not a praying man but..

My recent email conversation with Mark went thusly..

MSavoy: speaking of chaos… Kim’s water broke this morning… James isn’t in. The fun has begun.

DJackson: HOLY SWEET JESUS! Too bad it didn’t go yesterday, the solstice is a sweet time to have a birthday. Plus the poor kid is going to be a Capricorn, and you know what they say about those.

So, though I’m not a praying man, my thoughts will be with the family Hargrave for the next while. Here’s hoping for a smooth and easy birth, and for the clan to be blessed with a healthy new addition in time to be home for Christmas. How long til the kid’s on a unicycle? Anybody care to start up a pool?
