Oh Gawd NOOOOO!!!
Jebus…I’ve only got a couple days left here at work, three to be exact, and I was looking forward to a little R&R.
Then the BC Govnerment pulls THIS over on ME!
Good GAWD! We’ll now be paying 53% on draft beer to 110% on wine and 159% on spirits.
I’d cry in my beer but I can’t afford to water it down any more…
“We got in a tan van,
us two in the back,
with Steve McGarrett
from Hawaii-Five-O.
At the steering wheel,
speeding away we slide into a
parking lot.
And all in slow motion,
These tough guys appear.”

Y’know, I saw that in the paper this morning and wondered why it was a byline, and not written in 2nd coming font.
Truly, this is a black day for democracy.
Seriously. To quote the BC Teacher Federation campaign: “Higher liquor prices? I didn’t vote for that”
I get the feeling that the research done for The Bar Project PRIOR to Feb 1, 04 will be useless data, due to the price hike. I guess OD will have to re-do all that painstaking research!
Too bad you can’t use the hawaii five o as per your lyrics since you wussied out on coming you pussy. heh heh
Huh? Wussied out from what?
You could use:
“Swordfish
Some people believe in astrology
Others believe in technology
Some people believe in all those “ologies”
But I believe in swordfish
He believes in swordfish
I believe in Happy Days
I believe in Joanie Loves Crotchie
I believe in all that TV crap
And I believe in swordfish
He believes in swordfish
Came up from the ghetto with the help of my stiletto
Every day I hear the people groan:
Why should we buy postage stamps?
We can make our own
We may be doing something wrong
We could be running a little too long
I guess we better end this song
I say I believe in swordfish
He believes in swordfish”
Or maybe a song from the Dead Milkmens new ablum!!
Could this be why prices are going up? 7 million liter tank of ethanol on fire
Oh. My. Gawd.
I…I…do I buy this album? I haven’t bought an album in over 4 years. Oh Gawd…new album…
I just wet ‘em.
No no, it’s a new ablum.
Oh, I know, and therein lays the deliema! Do I break my track record and go out and buy the album, or do I keep the ball rolling and just burn it?
What a dichotomy/deliema. To by or not by the ablum.
Buying an ‘ablum’…I wonder if they sell those…
Looks like they do!
Why don’t you just walk into a store and take it? Wouldn’t that be more convenient?
It would be if I was playing ‘Grand Theft Auto – Vice City’, but the sounds of sirens whailing all the time tends to keep me up at night.
…and in Canada, it’s not illegal to download music, just uploading it is frowned upon…
So is buying from a Flea market, but you mentioned you felt that was unethical as it’s all “stolen goods”.
I guess it’s not anonymous though…
2D has already paid for it with his CD/DVD/hard drive levy…
So it begs the question, if I download music while in Canada then return to Oz with it… am I breaking the law?
Only if you’re not wearing any pants!
How much has he paid? (ie how much per CD, or for his burner)
And does that go directly to the artists? I’m curious now…
Oz;
“I am just visiting Canada. Can I legally make private copies here?
A non-Canadian visiting Canada can make a private copy of a CD (even one he brought with him from a foreign country) and he will not be infringing copyright in Canada. His home state might consider the copied CD an infringing copy when he returns.
A Canadian making a private copy of a CD in another country could be infringing copyright in that country.”

How the money is distributed is determined by the Copyright Board, which ruled for 2003-2004 that it should be distributed as follows:
To Eligible Authors 66.0%
To Eligible Performers 18.9%
To Eligible Makers 15.1%
Where (roughly speaking) an author is a songwriter, a performer is a musician or singer, and a “maker” is a record production company.
Performers and makers only qualify for payment if they are Canadian. However, authors qualify regardless of their nationality.
Note that the Copyright Board does not indicate which author, performer or maker should be compensated, but simply how the funds should be apportioned amongst the three groups. The CPCC determines the amount to be distributed to each individual based on sales information (50%) and based on radio airplay (50%). This can be a complex calculation since there may be several authors and performers involved in any particular recording.
Here’s the sweet part for the playas: in 2001 and 2002, over 50 million dollars was distributed.
Here’s the FAQ:
http://neil.eton.ca/copylevy.shtml
“On March 19, 1998, Part VIII of the Copyright Act came into force. Until then, copying any sound recording for almost any purpose infringed copyright. Part VIII legalizes one such activity: copying of sound recordings of musical works onto recording media for the private use of the person who makes the copy.
It does not matter whether you own the original sound recording (on any medium), you can legally make a copy for your own private use.”
3%? That’s it. I’m buying two of these and i’m going to Victoria to sort this out. And that edumucation bidness to.
Hmmm you are starting to sway me, but you’re not quite there yet. As per your suggestion it may be legal to take a copy, but is it ethical?
Like the flea market, you’re not the one who stole it, so is it ok to buy it? If the flea market puts 5% towards a charity for the victems of theft, is it now ok? If you had your stereo ripped off and found it in a flea market, would you not care becasue the charity gave you some money?
This is really less about the legal and more about respect for the artist:
If one person has there album ripped 1000 times and someone only once, how does the Copyright board recognize that?
If a band (ala Metallica) says they don’t want their music distributed in this fashion, what choice do they have?
Funny words coming from the master of ‘beer theft’… =)
I think partially for the flea market though there is the violence inherent in the physical theft of something.
It bugs me that I get my stero ripped off from my car, it bugs me about the time it takes to get it replaced, but it REALLY annoys me to have to pay the $200 deductable for the broken window. That just makes me want to take a bat and smash-up those punks that smashed my window.
Same with home theft, I’m paying $500 deductable to get my stuff covered. It’s double theft.
Ah so becasue there is no physical violence, it’s ok?
As for ICBC I’d be ok with the deductible if I thought that I could get it back if proven not my fault. Except that no one will inviestigate the crime so unless the criminal just shows up and admits fault, we’re SOL without recourse.
Well, it’s not a crime to download music in Canada, but it is a crime to break into someones house/car and take things. The physical violence just makes it that much worse…
