Recently we have been having a bit of trouble with surfers… or more to the point, they are having a bit of trouble with sharks…

From The Age

“Another surfer was taken by a shark off the South Australian coast yesterday, the second attack in two days.
The 17-year-old was ripped from his surfboard off Black Point, near Elliston, on the Eyre Peninsula, about 1pm. “

Being the inquisitive scientist that I am, I did some research on the type of shark that was accused here and found this…

“This shark is a proven man-eater and is by
far the largest and most ferocious of the
Shark family… They tend to storm
in like a freight train hitting the prey from
behind, taking huge chunks of flesh during
the hit … feeding mainly on seals, or
what else happens to be in the water at the
same time as them.
It carries a fearsome set of straight, triangular
serrated teeth which are readily replaced within 24
hours if one should break off during a kill.
The stomach contents of some Great White’s
taken have included a sea lion, and a whole
horse.”

There is something about an animal that regenerates its razor sharp teeth in 24 hours that I don’t like…

Swimming anyone?
